Robert Pattinson on new film The Twilight Saga: New Moon
The 23-year-old Londoner has of course been part of a literary phenomenon turned unstoppable movie franchise before, starring as the noble but ill-fated Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
“When I went into Harry Potter it was the fourth one. Everyone knew each other, people had married each other on the crew and everything was so well oiled.
“Coming to Twilight at an embryonic level it was interesting to see so many different warring energies.
“The studio knew they had a trilogy at the time and it seemed like certain criteria had to be met to set that up. Catherine (Hardwicke, the director of Twilight) obviously had an Indie background. It was a very volatile set in many ways.”
There has been a great deal of press about how Pattinson and Kristen Stewart have been overwhelmed by the attention from the fans, particularly the speculation surrounding their relationship and whether their on screen romance has been continued off screen.
Pattinson’s concedes he might have been exaggerating when he said he didn’t dare venture out of his hotel bedroom.
“I don’t have a huge amount of foresight in interviews. I end up describing my day rather than the surrounding months. So when we did that last interview I was kind of trapped in a hotel room.
“But there are always ways and places you can disappear to. It just involves a little more thought. You can’t wander round..
“The novelty hasn’t worn off yet but if I am still stuck in hotel rooms in 10 years and the only way of dealing with it is by hiding then it probably will annoy me a little bit.”
Paparazzi attention has already meant that he has had to stop driving.
“I never had a car in London so having got one in LA last summer I only really had a few months driving without 10 cars following me around. I’m too scared to drive now, so that’s a little annoying.”
The demands and distractions of his film career have also made it hard for him to follow his other passion, which is music. A singer/composer who plays guitar and piano, he mainly performed in pubs. However, he sings two songs on the Twilight sound track and three on an independent comedy drama he made called How to Be.
“I want to do gigs again, but I guess the only way to do gigs is to do an album to silence everyone first, then you can do as many as you want.
“I really miss it but I am afraid of it being overshadowed by this. I think it also makes you set your standard higher because you need to overshadow this massive fame.
“You’ve got to be winning Grammys and stuff before you do another open mic.”
