The long-distance voter

John Hemming

VOTE early and vote often is the traditional light-hearted refrain of politicians fighting an election.

Of course, anyone taking it literally is committing electoral fraud and nobody has been more vigilant in fighting ballot-box cheats than Lib-Dem MP John Hemming.

But the MP for Yardley did vote twice in one day, once in Birmingham and once in London.

As councillor for Yardley South he voted to back the local authority's recycling plans. Then he nipped on the train to London for a House of Commons debate and vote on transport.

He said: "I'm a councillor and an MP and it can mean a lot of travelling."
