Peter's friends in the north

THE 300th anniversary of the union between England and Scotland passed with relatively little fanfare.

Instead of celebrations, we had warnings that the union is under threat.

For one local MP, the solution is clear - the English must have their own Parliament, just as the Scots have an assembly.

Peter Luff (Con Mid Worcestershire) has signed a House of Commons motion claiming there is "a clear majority in favour of an English parliament."

If an English Parliament is established, it is unlikely to be in London. Birmingham would be the obvious home. Expect the row to end all rows if Mr Luff's proposal ever becomes reality.
