How the Iron Lady lost her marble and turned bronze

MISTY eyes in the House of Commons Lobby, as MPs unveil a statue of Margaret Thatcher.

Even Labour MPs paid their respects to the Iron Lady as she formally welcomed the bronze masterpiece to the House of Commons.

But Tory Sir Patrick Cormack, MP for South Staffordshire, has mixed feelings despite praising the "great Thatcher statue".

He says: "I cannot but have a tinge of regret. When I was chairman of the works committee, I managed to raise the funds for a wonderful marble statue for the Lobby.

"Alas, after its unveiling at the Guildhall some idiot decapitated it and the committee decided to commission another statue rather than erect the repaired one."
