Gordon gets covering fire from his cronies

FORMER Cabinet Ministers Charles Clarke and Alan Milburn ruffled a few feathers with the launch of a website designed to promote discussion about the future of the Labour Party.

Critics said it was really about how to stop Gordon Brown becoming party leader. The pair, both big fans of Tony Blair's political philosophy, don't like the Chancellor.

Now a group of Mr Brown's friends have got their revenge. In a House of Commons motion they compare the website launch to another event in Parliament that day - a debate about maggots.

They point out that only 18 Labour MPs and Peers out of 563 bothered to turn up.

And they remind colleagues that the launch took place in the same hotel used by Mark Oaten, a Liberal Democrat MP whose bid for his own party's leadership ended in disgrace.

Mr Blair wants a "stable and orderly" transition. Fat chance.
