No front-runner emerges to foot 2012 bill

AS the cost of the 2012 Olympics shoots up from the original estimate of £2.375 billion to a staggering £10 billion, there is some confusion about who will pay the bill.

One option is to put up council taxes in London. But as the games are supposed to benefit the whole country, get ready for an announcement that we are all going to have to contribute.

Meanwhile, Tamworth MP Brian Jenkins (Lab) has been getting into the swing of things, telling the House of Commons that it's not the winning that counts: "The prize is not just a gold medal; it is what the athletes do to the status of the clubs that they come from and the part that they play in their community as role models."
