All is forgiven

THE former Conservative candidate who once called the party "a lost cause" has been selected to fight a Black Country seat at the next election.

Nigel Hastilow, a former editor of the Mail's sister paper The Birmingham Post, will contest Halesowen, currently held by Labour MP Sylvia Heal.

He was selected despite the embarrassment caused back in 2001, when it emerged he had complained on his website that "the Conservative Party is a lost cause."

Referring to the party's then leader, William Hague, Mr Hastilow said: "Its leader is not popular, its policies have all been aped by New Labour, and its personalities are still mired in sleaze."

At the time, Mr Hastilow was the party's candidate for Edgbaston in Birmingham. It seems all has now been forgiven.
