Call for a new anthem

SINGING God Save the Queen is a traditional feature of an England football match.

But that could all change if Lynne Jones (Lab Selly Oak) gets her way.

She is one of seven MPs calling for England "to adopt an appropriate song to be the English national anthem".

The MPs say England's use of the British national anthem is unfair to the Scots and Welsh: "It is quite wrong that England use the British national anthem when competing as England rather than as Great Britain or the United Kingdom, particularly when playing the other home nations who also have God Save the Queen as their British national anthem."

Sporting associations such as the FA should agree on a new song, say Dr Jones and her colleagues.
