Keeping MP grounded

ONE of the biggest challenges facing an MP is keeping their feet on the ground, according to the wife of Birmingham MP Richard Burden.

Jane Slowey stood for the Labour in Hall Green in the 1992 General Election. She didn't get in, so she did the next best thing - marrying Mr Burden (Lab), who won Northfield in the same election.

In her time she's played a number of roles including Chief Executive of Birmingham Voluntary Services Council. But part of her job is to give Mr Burden a hard time, she says.

"It's not a normal life by any means. When you go to Parliament, MPs are treated as special and it's very easy for them to lose their grip on reality.

"I see my role very much as being 'the most difficult constituent' to Richard, to keep enriching and strengthening his understanding of what's going on in the outside world."
