Minister delivers a missive to Royal Mail

REMEMBER the postman who got into trouble with his bosses for telling residents how to opt out of junk mail?

The Royal Mail suspended Roger Annies after he delivered his own leaflet explaining how they could opt out of unwanted mailshots by filling out a simple form.

Birmingham peer Jeff Rooker has now revealed that he is one of many who followed Mr Annies' advice.

And in his role as Environment Minister, he warned the days of junk mail may soon be over.

Lord Rooker (Lab), the former MP for Perry Barr, said: "I do not want to open up old wounds for the Post Office but delivering 350 million items of unaddressed junk mail is an unacceptable way for it to earn a living these days.

"I can remember the scandal last year when it suspended a postie who told his customers they could stop unaddressed junk mail. I followed his advice and, although it is very difficult, it is possible to do so.

"We are going to make it easier to stop the unaddressed junk mail."

He added: "The Post Office should hang its head in shame over the postie who was suspended."

Perhaps the Royal Mail would have been better off following Mr Annies' example rather than punishing him?
