Hemming casts his Labour vote

EAGER candidates for Labour's Deputy Leadership need to court every voter - including Birmingham MP John Hemming.

The Yardley MP has received a ballot paper and has been scratching his head wondering which of the six candidates to vote for. There's just one snag. Mr Hemming is a Liberal Democrat.

A keen jazz musician in his spare time, he apparently received the form as a member of the musicians' union.

The MP cheekily asked readers of his website to offer him advice on who he should support. But he may simply abstain.

"On reflection, I've come to the view that none of them quite make the grade," he said.

Labour MP Tom Watson (Lab West Bromwich West) might be taking this internet thing a bit far.

He really will vote in the leadership election and he's backing backbencher Jon Cruddas for the party's deputy leadership.

But voters also get to fill in second and third preferences. Mr Watson has asked readers of his website for their advice on who to pick.
