Jowell braced to face Olympic critics

CULTURE Secretary Tessa Jowell has chosen Birmingham as the first stop for a roadshow telling the whole nation how it will benefit from the 2012 Olympics in London.

But has the row over the controversial £400,000 logo got her worried?

Publicity material for the event, when members of the public will be invited to quiz Ms Jowell and others, suggests she expects a bumpy ride. She is quoted as saying: "I know we will have critics and I have no intention of hiding from them."

Mid-Worcestershire Conservative MP Peter Luff is the latest politician to condemn the logo. He said businesses might be put off sponsoring the games - because they wouldn't want to put the logo on their products.

And he has joined 10 colleagues signing a Commons motion urging the London Olympic Committee to scrap the logo "and replace it with something more appropriate".
