Carrier bag caution

SOLIHULL MP Lorely Burt (Liberal Democrat) has a great idea for reducing pollution - encouraging supermarkets to charge for carrier bags.

She told colleagues: "Several supermarket initiatives involve charging a small amount for good-quality plastic bags that can be exchanged once their useful life is over. That has proved extremely popular with consumers, and... we could move in that direction."

It sounds fair enough, but one needs to tread carefully. I once worked in a supermarket where managers had the bright idea of charging for bags - and there was nothing more certain to turn the most mild-mannered shopper into an angry beast.
