Smokers' refuge under threat

SMOKERS in the House of Commons could lose one of their last remaining hide-outs if a Birmingham MP gets her way.

When new no-smoking laws come into force on July 1, one of the few places MPs will be allowed to enjoy a cigarette is the House of Commons terrace, an outdoor area overlooking the Thames.

Now Lynne Jones (Lab, Selly Oak) has launched a campaign to stop her colleagues polluting the air even there.

She has written to the Commons Speaker asking him to act "given Parliament's special position and the influence that it could have".

Commons rules already dictate that ministers are banned from smoking in their official cars. If they try to light up, drivers are under orders to tell them to stop.
