Mum's duties have the last word

WESTMINSTER was buzzing with excitement last Wednesday, as Tony Blair said his goodbyes and Gordon Brown stepped in to replace him as Prime Minister.

But Conservative MP Caroline Spelman, a mother-of-three as well as MP for Meriden and member of the Tory Shadow Cabinet, had more important matters to deal with.

She records: "While the Prime Minister sets off for a final audience with the Queen, I set off to attend my youngest son's school sports day, leaving staff glued to Sky News.

"By the time I come back, complete with a shot- putting trophy, the country has a new Prime Minister."

Mrs Spelman, who says her duties include running Mum's taxi service, is set to be even busier following her elevation this week to the post of Conservative Chair.
