Poacher becomes gamekeeper

TOMMY "Gun" Watson, who quit as Defence Minister when he demanded Tony Blair's resignation last year, is back in the government.

Somewhat bizarrely, Gordon Brown has drafted him into the whip's office - which is meant to enforce party discipline.

To put it another way, his job now is to prevent MPs doing to Gordon Brown what he and colleagues did to Tony Blair last year.

And he's not the only one. Mark Tami, a Welsh MP who also signed the letter calling on Mr Blair to quit, has also been made a whip.

Is this part of the healing process, designed to bring all factions of the Labour Party back together?

Or simply a reward for helping kick Mr Blair out of office - and make Mr Brown Prime Minister?
