Could Liam be In The Thick Of It?

Liam Byrne

THE BBC this week repeated some episodes of its excellent comedy show The Thick of It, for those of us who missed it the first time around.

The storyline, first shown at Christmas, concerned a hapless immigration minister who makes a hash of announcing plans to reform immigration policy.

The big idea is to create an independent panel which will make recommendations about the number of people allowed in - allowing the government to say it's nothing to do with them.

But this is a real government policy, announced last year by a real immigration minister - Birmingham MP Liam Byrne (Lab Hodge Hill).

In the show, the minister briefly becomes a candidate for the Labour leadership. Are the show's makers predicting great things for our man?
