Parliamentary water's not so gree for John

John Spellar

EVERY politician is "green" nowadays. If there's one thing they all agree on, it's saving energy, reducing pollution and fighting the threat of global warming.

But they don't always practise what they preach, Black Country MP John Spellar (Lab Warley) has discovered.

He has learned that 156,157 litres of bottled water were consumed by the House of Commons last year, including 16,200 litres drunk during long committee meetings and 105,957 litres sold in canteens.

Yes, instead of using perfectly good water from taps in the many kitchens dotted around Parliament, MPs pay to have the bottled stuff shipped in from across the country.

Good for the haulage industry but not so much for the environment, as Mr Spellar pointed out to colleagues.
