Life really does begin at 40 Tom!

POOR Tom Watson (Lab West Bromwich East). The Black Country MP has reached his 40th birthday and, like any sensible human being, welcomed the milestone with a period of introspection and gloominess.

Sharing his concerns with readers of his website, he wrote: "At twenty, Jane Austen had written Pride and Prejudice. John Glenn orbited the moon at the age I am now."

But Tom sells himself short. How many people can say they brought down a Prime Minister, at any age?

Labour MPs who, along with Tom, forced Tony Blair to retire this year - earlier than he had planned - tell me there is no truth in reports published in the Sunday newspapers that they now regret their decision.
