THE government hopes to convince MPs to back its plans to let police detain terror suspects without charge.

Home Secretary, Redditch MP Jacqui Smith, is proposing that detectives should be able to hold them for up to 42 days.

Backbencher Keith Vaz couldn't resist slipping in a reference to the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy when he questioned Ms Smith in a House of Commons committee hearing yesterday.

Was 42 days chosen because it was "the answer to life, the universe and everything," he asked.
