Tories caught out on station

Jon Walker

AS THE city celebrates the government's decision to approve the refurbishment of New Street, Conservatives are none too happy about the way the announcement was made.

Ruth Kelly, the Transport Secretary, was in the city yesterday to announce that the Government was funding the ambitious Birmingham Gateway scheme with £388 million.

But Parliament is in recess - meaning it is closed for a week. Tories feel the announcement should have been made to the House of Commons, but instead was timed for Labour to enjoy the maximum PR impact.

And Andrew Mitchell, the Conservative Shadow Minister for Birmingham, is said to be particularly peeved.

He was in war-torn Sierra Leone in his role as Shadow International Development Secretary when the news came out.
