Easier targets

EVEN the mightiest warrior can mellow as the years go by. So it is with John Spellar (Lab Warley), one of the most battle-scarred figures on the Labour benches.

The leader of the Labour right was once a key figure in the party's internal conflicts, taking on the militants and Trotskyites in the fight for the party's soul. But the old splits have long since been healed, with the Trots consigned to history's dustbin.

Now Mr Spellar has turned his attention to other matters - such as encouraging fellow MPs to drink tap-water and campaigning to save the orang-utan.

Friends on the Labour benches tease that he is going soft.
