Feuding with the big man

Jon Walker

TEMPERS are becoming frayed in the Labour Party.

A number of backbenchers have expressed dismay about changes to the tax system, including Gisela Stuart (Lab Edgbaston).

But the leader of the tax rebels, MP Frank Field, went further this week, when he suggested Gordon Brown should consider quitting.

At a meeting of Labour MPs, Mr Field was slammed by fellow backbencher Mike Gapes as "a creeping Judas".

Mr Field may just have done Gordon Brown a favour by raising the spectre of resignation.

What looked like a principled stand to help poorer people now looks a little like a personal feud with the Prime Minister.

For the average backbencher, this isn't something they want to be part of.
