Paranoia... or a plot?

Jon Walker

GORDON Brown's team are getting increasingly nervous.

A group of Labour backbenchers close to Tony Blair are heading for Crewe, where a by-election takes place on Thursday.

They include Birmingham MP Gisela Stuart (Lab Edgbaston) as well as Frank Field and Kate Hoey - all backbenchers seen as less than supportive of Gordon Brown.

Their mission? To campaign in support of the Labour candidate, of course.

And yet, Mr Brown's inner circle apparently see it as part of a plot to undermine the Prime Minister.

Sounds like the first stages of paranoia to me, although the old cliche has never been more true - just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you.
