Lynda's victory on lap-dancing

A SMALL victory for Stourbridge MP Lynda Waltho (Lab), who is campaigning for new laws allowing councils to restrict lap-dancing clubs.

She wants authorities to be able to say no to planned new clubs, just as they already have the power to reject plans for sex shops or cinemas.

The aim is not to ban them entirely, just to let councils have some control over where they open.

But the proposals are unlikely to become law unless they win Government backing.

Now Harriet Harman, the Minister for Women and Labour's Deputy Leader, has given her support.

Ms Harman said: "The important point is that local communities and local authorities need to know that the law is there to back them up.

"If the community and local authority think it is inappropriate for a lap-dancing club, the law should be there to back them up."
