City's MPs make a stand

Jon Walker

A SMALL victory for Birmingham's Gisela Stuart, who called for Zimbabwe president Robert Mugabe to be stripped of his knighthood in April.

The Government did as she suggested last week, to coincide with Nelson Mandela's condemnation of the brutal regime.

Now she has gone a stage further and suggested that Britain should refuse to recognise Mr Mugabe's government - effectively treating him like some guy who has managed to steal the keys to the presidential palace.

Other MPs to back the idea include Roger Godsiff (Lab Sparkbrook and Small Heath), Lynne Jones (Lab Selly Oak) and John Hemming (Lib Dem Yardley).

For reasons that are unclear, but arguably to their credit, Birmingham's MPs are leading the opposition to Mr Mugabe among British politicians.
