One Show too big for its roots

THEY called it the One Show, now it's the Gone Show.

After a successful month's broadcasting from Birmingham, the BBC's nightly magazine programme presented by local lad Adrian Chiles has secured a year-long run - and been promptly transferred to London.

Apparently, the Beeb's Mailbox centre doesn't have the resources to cope with a major programme like this, even though it was trumpeted as a "state of the art facility" when it replaced Pebble Mill a couple of years ago.

Compare the investment in Manchester which will become the home of the Corporation's sport output, Radio Five Live and children's programming.

Our city has been robbed of the chance to be a fully-fledged network TV centre.

Maybe it should be renamed the BBBC - the Bye Bye Birmingham Corporation.
