NOW the Portuguese police have officially removed the finger of suspicion from Kate and Gerry McCann, maybe the hateful whispering campaign against them will finally end. But somehow I doubt it.

Yes, the couple were foolish to leave young Madeleine unguarded in her hotel room while they enjoyed tapas with their friends - and they no doubt rue that blunder every hour of every day.

That doesn't mean they in any way "deserve" what happened though, or that they should be regarded as unfit parents.

It's simply impossible to keep tabs on your kids all the time, no matter how much you love them.

Any honest mum and dad will admit, "There but for the grace of God go I..."
