Stoke City Res 1 Aston Villa Res 2

CARLOS Cuellar made his first appearance in a Villa shirt in last night’s reserve victory at Stoke.

The Spaniard was joined on the field by first-team players Steve Sidwell and Marlon Harewood. Villa took the lead on the half-hour mark, when Wayne Routledge skipped down the right wing, and his low inviting cross was swept home by local boy Nathan Delfouneso past Steve Simonsen.

Stoke equalised through deadline-day signing Danny Higginbotham’s header from a free-kick, but it was Delfouneso who created the winner for Villa.

The 17-year-old put enough pressure on Lewis Buxton to mis-direct his header, which fell to midfielder Isaiah Obsourne, who lashed home a low volley from 15 yards with five minutes remaining.

Stoke were reduced to 10 men in stoppage time when Danny Pugh appeared to kick substitute Marc Albrighton.

STOKE CITY: Simonsen, Wilkinson, Pugh, Wedderburn, Buxton, Higginbotham, J Phillips, Grocott, Pericard, Cresswell, de Laet. Subs: Moult, Harrison, McDonald, Vauls, Alexander.

VILLA: Parish, Herd, Baker, Sidwell, Cuellar, Knight, Routledge (Stieber, 79), Osbourne, Harewood, Delfouneso, Bannan (Albrighton, 67). Subs: Dau, Lichaj, Clark.
