Aston Villa 1, Tottenham 2: Bill Howell's big match verdict
Mar 16 2009 by Bill Howell, Birmingham Mail
VILLA’s month from HELL continues to wreak havoc with no sign of abating.
Sunday February 15 and supporters dreaming of silverware on perhaps two fronts, were singing songs of Istanbul and were laughing at all the mishaps befalling Arsenal and Chelsea.
Now all folk appear able to do is look over their shoulders at the possibility that all the ridiculously positive advancements of the last two-and-a-half seasons could go up in smoke.
A home record as bad as a relegation contender, and away as good as title favourites.
Villa’s season is one entirely of contradictions.
It would be entirely flippant to suggest that having flown 7,000 miles for a sunshine break in Dubai that perhaps one or two players were feeling ‘leggy’.
It would also be wrong to suggest that Villa are scared of playing at Villa Park.
Tottenham did not turn up in horror outfits, just as Stoke didn’t wear gargoyle masks and Chelsea vampire costumes.
And it would be incorrect to make the assumption that nerves are taking their toll.
Villa’s players are not being asked to sit their driving tests on Spaghetti Junction.
But there are statistics, statistics and damned statistics all around.
