O'Neill backed to get the best from Villa duo

Steven Davis

NORTHERN Ireland legend Gerry Armstrong believes the appointment of Martin O'Neill as manager will act as a huge spur to Steven Davis and Aaron Hughes.

Armstrong, who played alongside O'Neill when scoring the winning goal to beat Spain in the 1982 World Cup, believes the former Celtic boss will bring success back to the club.

He said: "Moving to Villa would mean he would be in charge of Northern Ireland players Aaron Hughes and Steve Davis.

"I know Martin would enjoy working with them because both lads are very professional and excellent footballers.

"And Steve and Aaron in turn would learn much from Martin. That would benefit Villa and Northern Ireland."

O'Neill, aged 54, was interviewed for the England job this summer and was wanted by Newcastle, Sunderland and Middlesbrough.

His arrival would be a huge coup for Doug Ellis and the Villa board.

Now an assistant manager with Northern Ireland, Armstrong believes he would be looking at top eight straight away.

"I know he has had many offers. In my opinion Villa are not a top-eight club at the moment and that's where Martin would aim to take them.

"He would need the resources, though, but there is no doubt he has the class and the managerial ability to be a big success."
