I share frustration of the fans - O'Neill

Martin O'Neill

MANAGER Martin O'Neill recognises that Villa's fans are urging him to "do battle" and bring new players to the club.

The good news as far as they are concerned is that he is "pretty close to one or two deals", and, furthermore, the Irishman dismisses any notions that his frustrations this summer might affect his team on the pitch.

Villa head for Newcastle tomorrow (5.15pm) in high spirits despite last weekend's defeat to Liverpool.

Only goalkeeper Scott Carson has been added to their ranks as O'Neill seeks the two defenders he desperately needs.

O'Neill's problem is that he is already searching for players who will be good business for Villa NEXT season.

His interest in Curtis Davies remains strong, but despite being linked with Jose Bosingwa of Porto and Justin Hoyte of Arsenal, he remains without a recognised right-back in his squad.

"It can be as simplistic as the fee, or it can be more complicated - a number of other things," O'Neill said of the reasons behind the current impasse. "It used to be so simple. Now it has got rather convoluted but I am very hopeful and confident things will happen.

"You don't mind paying a bit more because, inevitably in this type of market, you might have to. Your supporters demand you do battle and get some players in. I have allowed some players to leave and I don't now want to be left short.

"I want as much quality in as I can get because over a period of time, this season and next season, that is the idea of the football club.

"We are pretty close to one or two deals, which we have been for some time. I expect them to materialise before the end of the transfer deadline."
