Gabriel Agbonlahor: I want that England cap

Gabriel Agbonlahor

GABRIEL Agbonlahor believes his return to fitness and a continuation of his good form can earn him a senior England call-up.

The 21-year-old has scored just once in his last 14 games over the last three months but showed flashes of his old self against Reading.

Injury robbed him of a first cap after he was named in Fabio Capello's first squad to play Switzerland, but he hopes to be in the groove for next month's friendly against France in Paris.

"It's brilliant to make the step up. Everybody has been saying things about me all season, but I've just tried to concentrate on playing my game," he said.

"I want to keep improving and I've worked hard to get to this point. The gaffer's been great and never stopped encouraging me.

"I feel I'm a much better player this season and I've learned a lot and I'm delighted I made the squad.

"I just hope I stay in it next time because the thought of joining up with a senior England squad is a tremendous honour. But I won't be taking that for granted."

Agbonlahor says Villa's focus has to be on Europe. "Last season we failed to get into the European positions and it would be a disappointment if we missed out again.

"It will take time, what we're building here. But we've got every chance of getting into Europe this season."

Agbonlahor is not unduly concerned by his lack of goals: "My confidence is high. It's been a good season for me and if we can keep creating the chances as a team then I know I will put my fair share away."

He praised strike partner John Carew for the way in which he terrorised Reading.

"On his day, no-one can cope with John with his physical presence," he said. "He's definitely helped my game too and he's always talking to me, which is good."
