Ashley Young shows he can also play at the back

Ashley Young

ASHLEY Young might usually be recognised for his sparkling wing-play and pin-point set-pieces.

But Martin O'Neill believes he is a full-back's dream - because Young's defensive qualities are a huge asset to Villa's back-four.

"His workrate is quite phenomenal for one so light," O'Neill said.

"He's terrific at the defensive side of his game too- he slots back in there.

"If you were playing behind him, you would be absolutely delighted with him because he can close people down, he forces forwards to go where he wants them because he knows what they're thinking.

"You would hardly believe how good he is at that side of his game, but he's been brilliant."

O'Neill was quoted as suggesting Young was Villa's answer to Manchester United's Portuguese wizard Ronaldo after his return to form against Bolton.

But O'Neill has set the record straight and insisted the youngster has some way to go before he can be likened to the world's best player.

"I kind of sensed when I spoke after Saturday's game that that was the angle some people would put on it," O'Neill said.

"But he's had a really great season and I've been really pleased with him. He's been absolutely brilliant."
