Curtis Davies aims to catch Fabio Capello's eye
CURTIS Davies could easily spend this week bemoaning the fact he is not on World Cup duty with England – but that’s not really the Villa defender’s style.
Instead Davies has conceded he must up his game to catch Fabio Capello’s eye.
And if the 23-year-old’s speedy recovery from a ruptured Achilles tendon is anything to go by, once he sets his sights on a goal he invariably succeeds.
That said, the former Albion man admits he faces a real fight to force his way into Capello’s plans.
He reflected: “I believe I will get that England cap.
“I’ve got to feel confident in myself. That’s always been my goal and I’ve always believed it will happen – whether it will be soon or in the distant future.
“Centre-half has got to be the strongest position in the England team. If you look at the players that are there – Rio (Ferdinand), John Terry and then obviously behind them there’s Woodgate, Upson, Brown, Richards, Wheater, Taylor, Anton Ferdinand. You could go on forever. This country is just blessed with centre-halves.
“You need to be at the top of your game to play for England anyway but you need to be at the very top to play centre-half.
“For me to do that I need to play better than I am at the moment. I’ve had no contact from Fabio Capello and his team and I have no right to.
“There’s plenty of competition in the team here at Villa.
“If I’m not playing here then I’m going to get nowhere near the England squad. So my main focus is to keep my head down and play my game. For now I can’t think about the luxuries of England.”
