John Carew: We’re going places

JOHN Carew says the win over Sunderland is evidence of the advancement made by Villa this season.

The Norwegian international believes Villa would not have picked up maximum points from such a game last term.

“Last year we finished sixth but we probably wouldn’t have got three points in that game. We have taken things a step further,’’ he said.

“We have got more experience as a group than last year, we also have amazing young talent and things are getting better and better as a result.

“It was an amazing three points even though it was not our best game.

“They didn’t create too much danger even though they had a lot of the ball, so it was a day just to get the three points.

“Ashley’s goal was very important at a decisive moment. It was a brilliant goal. It was all about the result. The first half was good and I don’t know what happened in the second but they were having the ball more than us.

“But it is amazing to come back in a game like that and it just shows how much better this team is and how much potential we have”

Villa have equalled their start of 1999/2000 when they won four and drew one of their opening six matches.

Carew said: “It is an amazing start, it is just important to be up there and then maybe have a little gap to sixth and seventh.” Fans’ favourite Carew already looks on the way to emulating Juan Pablo Angel’s haul of 23 goals in 2003/04 having hit five in all competitions – four of which have arrived in the Premier League.

“I’m very happy with four league goals but I don’t go out thinking about goals,’’ he said. “First of all it is about working 100 per cent and playing well and creating chances.

“Then if I can do that continuously the goals will come automatically. But it has been a good start.”

Carew paid tribute to the fans who are loudly giving their backing to the striker with his new song: “John Carew – he’s bigger than me and you, he’s gonna score one or two – John Carew...”

He said: “The fans are amazing. They are carrying us all the way. They are the best fans ever.”

Carew admitted his flicked goal was more a case of premonition than anything else.

“I had a feeling the ball would come to me, so I didn’t do what I would normally do. I decided to stay out rather than attack the goal line and luckily it went in,’’ he said.

“It was being in the right place.”
