Young: Carew oozes Brazilian blend

ASHLEY Young hailed strike partner John Carew after the Norwegian took his goal tally to five in all competitions for the season with a Brazilian-style flick against Sunderland.

Only a week ago Gabby Agbonlahor was the cause of much mirth by likening Carew to football legend Pele.

But Young is in no doubt about the importance of the former Lyon striker to Villa’s cause.

He said: “It was a brilliant goal. He always tries that sort of thing in training and most times he misses. But it was a great finish.

“He was brilliant throughout the game and really deserved that goal. We’re all looking forward to games at the moment.

“Everybody – not just in the team but the whole squad – have been exceptional.

“We have had a great start to the season and hopefully that can continue.

“That’s three league wins on the trot and winning is always a nice feeling.

“Now we have got some tough games ahead but we can enjoy the moment and then get down to the serious business on Thursday against Litex Lovech,” added the striker.

Young said it was important for Villa to register a win after the shock of losing to QPR in the Carling Cup just 72 hours earlier.

“We’re delighted. We were disappointed midweek but we wanted to get back on track in the Premiership and that’s what we did.

“We got the three points and the dressing room is really happy.”

Young lit up Villa Park with an exquisite free-kick from 20 yards that gave Craig Gordon no chance.

He put his goal-of-the-season contender – his third in all competitions and second in the Premier League following his goal at Tottenham – down to practice.

“I was one-on-one (with Liam Miller) and was fouled. The ball was put down and it was there to be struck.

“I have worked on it more than a few times and luckily for me it went in and we kicked on from there.

“Of course it is down to practice. In training the balls go all over the place! But one of them was going to go in, and fortunately it did on Saturday.”
