Martin O'Neill says Aston Villa don't need to rely on John Carew

GABRIEL Agbonlahor’s ability to excel in the role of a lone front man has convinced Martin O’Neill he can live without his talismanic striker John Carew.

A senior international call-up with Fabio Capello’s England last week was the latest honour for Agbonlahor, who has already scored seven league goals this season.

Carew was an integral part of the team up to the home clash with Portsmouth in mid-October.

But fatigue and then hip and thigh problems which coincided with the breaking of a late-night curfew prior to the clash with Ajax on October 23, have hindered Carew’s season greatly.

Indeed, he has started just two of the last eight matches, with Villa winning four of the six he missed and drawing with Manchester United in another.
