Aston Villa: Cup commitments won't hurt top four challenge, vow players

ASTON Villa’s players are not concerned that their cup commitments will disrupt their top four challenge, despite the potential for 32 matches in 143 days.

That is the gruelling glut of games that Martin O’Neill’s men could face if they continue competing on three fronts in the Premier League, UEFA Cup and FA Cup.

From today’s derby showdown against West Bromwich Albion to the end of the season, Villa are scheduled to play another 18 league matches.

If Villa keep were to keep their successful season rolling by getting to the UEFA Cup final on May 20 and the FA Cup final on May 30 it would involve 14 more games – five in the FA Cup, not including possible replays, and nine in the UEFA Cup.

A schedule of 32 games in 143 days would leave Villa with the prospect of a game around every four and a half days on average.

But the congested calendar is such that many of the fixtures would fall during March, April and May with seven matches in each month and possibly even eight in April.
