Aston Villa boss Martin O’Neill says: ‘We won’t be held to ransom’

MARTIN O’Neill has reiterated his commitment to not paying over the odds for his transfer targets.

But the Villa boss says he will not go to “utterly outrageous” amounts at a time when the market shows signs of exploding because of Manchester City’s riches.

Blackburn have slapped a £25million price tag on Roque Santa Cruz, according to the player, who also interests O’Neill, while City have reportedly lodged a bid in the region of £100million for AC Milan’s Brazilian midfielder Kaka.

The effect has been a shooting up of prices everywhere but O’Neill insists Villa will continue to search for the quality additions they badly need.

“We will look to see if we can strengthen because I think that would be important,” he said.

“If we can do that it will be great. If we are unable to do it then it won’t be through a lack of trying.

“You don’t mind paying a bit over the odds but if it becomes outrageous then you decide to leave it.”
