Aston Villa boss Martin O’Neill says: ‘We won’t be held to ransom’

Only five top-flight clubs have dipped into the market.

Manchester United have signed Zoran Tosic and Adem Ljajic from Partizan Belgrade, Wayne Bridge moved to Manchester City for £10million, Jermain Defoe made a £15million switch to Tottenham, Stoke City have signed Matthew Etherington and James Beattie, while Bolton have added Sebastien Puygrenier from Zenit St Petersburg and are in talks with Fulham’s Jimmy Bullard.

A sixth club, Albion, signed Jay Simpson on loan.

Villa are actually down on numbers after allowing Wayne Routledge to join QPR.

O’Neill added: “Every club in the Premier League is in a similar situation to ourselves, thinking wouldn’t it be nice to add to it.’’
