Villa head to Sunderland, where they have lost just one of their last five matches, having won their last four away league games to take their tally to seven wins on the road.
O’Neill added: “I think our away record speaks volumes for the team. We have managed to win away seven times in 10 visits and that is good by anyone’s standards.
“Back in our days at Nottingham Forest, when we won championships and European Cups, I don’t think anybody, even in the excitement at Christmas time, ever got carried away.
“We just looked to the next game and winning became habitual. Then what happened when you drew a game or two was that you rallied again. That is important.
“This season doesn’t finish until May 24, we have been at it since halfway through July. It is a long time.”
