“Someone asked me what would I do and I don’t have the answer to everything, but an extension of time at least would be something,” he said.

“Somebody said ‘Would you take it into the second or third week of February?’

“I know that the reasons for it were so that clubs couldn’t end up buying the European Cup at one stage or another.

“I accept that you can’t go on forever, you can’t arrive in a cup final and still have the ability to buy another nine players the night before it.

“But perhaps a bit of an extension?

“People are working beforehand thinking they can get things up and running for the 2nd 3rd or 4th of January but it never materialises.”
