Aston Villa: James Milner reveals secret of O'Neill's success

MARTIN O’Neill’s track record of turning fringe players into internationals is the reason why Villa are flying and why six players made it into Fabio Capello’s squad for the friendly in Spain, according to James Milner.

When Martin O’Neill took charge in August 2006 there was not a single Villa player in Steve McClaren’s first England squad.

Luke Young, who pulled out of the Spain game yesterday with a toe injury, was involved as a Charlton player.

Milner is in no doubt as to who deserves the credit.

“You can see from Martin O’Neill’s track record how well he has done with players, the players he has brought on,” said Milner.

“During my first spell with Villa, Gabby Agbonlahor was in and out of the team but you look at how much he has come on since, how much more he has added to his game.

“That’s no fluke. That is obviously down to the manager
