“We played really well and deserved to win this game,” he said. “I think the crowd went home reasonably happy.

“The players are learning all the time, not just the younger players in the side.

“The likes of Stiliyan Petrov, who was outstanding, and Gareth Barry can always pick up things in these games.

“Barry’s knowledge of the European scene is getting more extensive at international level.

“He was saying that some of those players played for Russia and were outstanding against England.”
