John Carew: Aston Villa ready for the Champions League

“We had two goals and didn’t take all our chances. With a bit of luck Gabby Agbonlahor would have put one late chance into the net to have made it 3-0.

“But when you are 2-0 up that should be more than enough. Playing at home was a big disappointment that we could not hold on to that lead.

“We should have held up the ball and pushed it around.”

Carew admitted his first league goal since at Wigan in October was one to remember.

“My goal was definitely one of the best I’ve scored,” he said.

“I wanted the ball to my legs to control it and then shot but Stiliyan smashed it at me and instinctively I decided to go for one touch and volleyed it at the goal.

“When Stiliyan kicks the ball like that it was possible to get that spin on the shot. I pictured it in my head in a way and it just happened. It was fantastic and it was a great feeling to score like that.

“It could have capped a perfect day but it didn’t turn out that way.”
