Aston Villa can beat Liverpool - Nigel Reo Coker

“I think that game is still fresh in a lot of players’ minds. So why can’t we go and do it again?

“We have shown throughout the year that we have fighting spirit and character.

“The amount of games that we have been behind in and have come back and won. That is the mentality that we will take into these games.”

Villa were denied a win at Anfield 14 months ago when Peter Crouch levelled in the dying moments of a pulsating clash.

Their record, with three wins – in 1993, 1999 and 2001 – since the formation of the Premier League, also gives cause for optimism.

But Liverpool’s form, having put a total of eight goals past Real Madrid and Manchester United, admittedly makes Villa’s task all the more tricky.

“It makes it more of a challenge for us but I am sure they will be very wary of us,” said Reo-Coker.

“We haven’t won in four league games now but they know the quality that we possess. It is just a matter of time before we turn it around.

“We don’t take too much notice of the form guides. The boys have always played well there and we can’t see any reason why we can’t compete like last season.”
