Liverpool FC legend backs Aston Villa to perform at Anfield

RAY Houghton believes a packed midfield and a marauding Gareth Barry given license to thrill could allow Villa to produce the “sterling performance” which he says they will need at Anfield.
Martin O’Neill’s side head for Merseyside on the back of a wretched run on a ground where Liverpool are undefeated in 25 league games.
And the Reds are on the crest of a wave after big victories over Real Madrid and Manchester United, not to mention the signing of Rafa Benitez’ new contract.
But former Liverpool and Villa midfielder Houghton is confident O’Neill’s team will finish the season on the up.
“It’s frustrating more than anything and Martin (O’Neill) will be looking for a reaction from his players,” Houghton said.
“No wins in seven shows you the form hasn’t been good.
“They have to get back to winning ways and the manager has to try to get a team out there that will be effective.
“You think back to when they picked up results before. He had a system that worked and stuck to it.
“The players are the ones he trusts. He should say ‘go out and perform to the best of your ability and results will take care of themselves’.
“They are maybe lacking a bit of confidence. They are looking fragile defensively too. Once they concede a goal they feel they are not going to get back into a game.
“But there is no doubt they will have a strong end to the season.
“They have very talented players, all they need is a bit of backing, support, a bit of help and confidence.”
Liverpool’s form has been frighteningly good since they were beaten up at Middlesbrough which appeared to knock them out of the title race.
Houghton though thinks a first win in eight years at Anfield is achievable.
