Liverpool FC v Aston Villa: The fans speak out!
Aston Villa's 5-0 thumping from Liverpool at the weekend has been in the press a lot over the last few days, it seems everyone has had a say. Here's the opinion of our Aston Villa messageboard users.
ExMidlander2: I've said it numerous times before and I'll say it again.
A.Young on numerous occassions fails to deliver against the big teams and until he does he isn't worthy of the over the top praise the not so bright supporters on here give him.
Villasupportersince1965: I remember when we lost 5 nil before against liverpool and Robbie Fowler destroyed us! I thought those days were gone!! Andy Gray said this was the best Villa team in 30 years and i agreed with him, then it all fell apart!
MAttyP: Can somebody explain to me the wisdom, of going to Anfield, in the form that Liverpool are in, and playing 4-4-2???
Its an open invitation to Gerrard to rip us apart, which is what happened!!
I still happen to think that Liverpool are fairly average, Torres and Gerrard aside, but when those two turn up, you've got big problems.
You play 4-5-1, stifle the midfield. 4-4-2 just gives Gerrard the license to run riot, which he did.
I'm no football manager, and unlike some on here, I can appreciate where O'Neill has taken us in two and a half years, but it beggars belief that he didn't see the need for a 4-5-1 in this game!!!!
Absolutely unbelievable.....
Rickmeister: No skill, no fight, no creativity, no bottle, no management, no leadership. Pathetic! The team have fallen apart....and it has been obvious this would happen for several weeks now. Finishing in 5th place (which looks dubious at the mo!) would still represent a decent season but 6th would be distinctly average based on how much MON spent in the summer.
VillaMoe: I knew it was a good shout to give the game a miss and play golf instead.
This has been on the cards for a while!
According to my mates who were at the game, there was just no passion, fight, energy or belief,as well as all the usual tactical nonsense.
Nevermind, easy game next. Made worse by the fact they've lost their last two.
Harry: What has Shorey done never to be given a chance? The way we are playing at the moment he surely cannot be any worse!
To me the logical formation was 4-5-1 with NRC in central midfield to man mark Gerrard and then Shorey at LB with Luke Young at RB. How hard is that? Why have two players up front to hold the ball up for no one to run onto, one is plenty!
Although I remain a supporter of MON I really think he has lost the plot now. This tinkerman approach to games is little short of baffling and his apparent inability or lack of desire to cover positions is positively dangerous now. Much as I rated Mellberg I thought he was a distinctly average RB last season and we passed signing someone / anyone in two transfer windows. I thought that was just a one off, apparently I was mistaken.
VillafanfromLuton: Should definetly have been 4-5-1, think MON made a big blunder there. Petrov should have been deeper and that would have at least negated Gerrards influence a bit.
Shorey needs to be given a chance if Bouma not fit enough yet.
