Gareth Barry's Champions League talk prompts fresh speculation with Liverpool FC
Gareth Barry has hinted that Champions League football would enhance his chances of playing in the World Cup for England, even though it is “not the be-all and end-all”.
The Aston Villa midfielder’s future beyond the end of this season continues to be a source of uncertainty with Liverpool set to renew their interest in him during the summer.
Villa’s hopes of hanging onto their longest serving player could hinge on whether Martin O’Neill’s men rescue their campaign in time to make a concerted push for the top four.
However, Barry, whose current contract expires in summer 2010, acknowledges that a lack of Champions League football has not held back his international career in recent months.
Although the 28-year-old left-footer does accept that playing for a top four club in Europe’s leading competition could help him book his place for next year’s World Cup finals in South Africa.
“This year, in terms of England, it has not been a problem for me not playing Champions League football,” said Barry.
“I have played in the UEFA Cup, I’ve played regularly for my country this last 12 months.
“It is not the be-all and end-all to be playing in the Champions League but it does help coming into the World Cup playing at the top level.”
Barry, who made his England debut against Ukraine in 2000, could move England a step closer to the World Cup by contributing to a victory against the same opponents at Wembley tomorrow evening.
